Small desk under 48 in: shop the leftover wall
A desk listed at 48 inches is a marketing rectangle. The wall you have is a leftover: door casing, a radiator, a closet return, and whatever the bed already stole. If that leftover is under 48 in (122 cm) — the common studio and one-bed band — buy as if the photo is lying.

Why “under 48 inches” is its own problem
US listings love 48 × 24 in writing tables. That number is easy to search and easy to regret. A 48 in top wants a clear run of about 50–52 in (127–132 cm) if you still want casing, a lamp, and a place that does not look jammed.
Most leftover apartment walls are shorter than that. They land in three bands:

The 48-on-48 fail
If the tape says 48.0 in from casing to casing, a 48 in top touches both sides. You lose:
- A place to grab the desk when you sit
- A clamp lamp on a side lip
- Any visual margin so the wall still looks like a room
That is furniture as a plug. Skip it. A 39.4 in (100 cm) writing slab on a 47 in leftover looks calmer than a 48 in slab that kisses the trim.
Depth still vetoes the width
Under-48 shopping is not only width. A 24 in deep top on a 36 in leftover still fails if the radiator eats 4 in and the chair has 28 in of floor. Read desk depth for laptop plus notebook and chair rollback before you fall for a “compact 48” listing that is 24 in deep and 29 in high with a thick apron.
Typical sitting height is still about 28–30 in (72–76 cm) to the top. Match the chair you already own.
Monitor class on a short leftover

Shape still matters
A short leftover is not automatically a folding wall desk. If the lease hates holes and the wall is a window, read folding vs corner vs sit-stand.
